Back pain sufferers number into the millions of people everyday. A sore back not only affects your ability to perform physical activities, it sometimes makes it uncomfortable to complete even the simplest of tasks.

Most commonly, back pain is lower back pain. Common causes include muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain) injury resulting from poor posture, improper lifting and/or obesity. The pain may include soreness or stiffness, or result in muscle spasms. Other causes of back pain can be more serious – a herniated disk, osteoporosis (porous bones often resulting from calcium loss), osteoarthritis (breakdown of joint cartilage), and fibromyalgia.

A doctor should treat long-term back pain, but there is no need to go running to the hospital for every little ache in your back. The most common form of back pain is localized to a specific region of your back, and can often be treated with medicines or other home remedies.

One of the most common remedies for acute back pain is the use of heat therapy. Heat therapy generally comes in two variations – moist and continuous low-level heat. Moist heat therapy provides a short-term infusion of heat by using warm water, such as a whirlpool or warm bath. The effectiveness of moist heat therapy lies in the fact that it is able to cover a large area of the back. If your back pain is a general dull ache, covering a large portion of your back with moist heat therapy should be your first course of treatment.

Low-level continuous heat therapy is advised for acute back pain found in a specific region of the back. This type of treatment consists of using a wrap or heating pad and applying four to six hours of continuous low-level heat to the specific area of the back causing the pain. By isolating the area causing your back pain, the low-level heat therapy is able to provide the muscles with the heat they need to relax over a period of time, while providing the additional blood flow needed to help assist your body in recovering from its woes.

Back pain is a serious problem for many people. An aching back can limit your ability to play your favorite sports, sit upright for long periods, or even enjoy the outdoors with your children. If you suffer from acute back pain, the treatments offered above may provide you the relief you need to enjoy your life again. As always, if your pain does not subside, or worsens, you should seek treatment with a medical professional.

There are a lot of misconceptions about weight loss supplements. Many people falsely believe that they do not work at all. On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who feel that supplements will work miracles. The truth lies somewhere in between.

Weight loss supplements can help you to lose weight, by adding a little extra help to your efforts. Many weight loss supplements help to improve your existing metabolism – the rate at which your body burns energy. This helps you to lose weight faster and easier than you would on your own. There is a variety of supplements available that help to speed your metabolism naturally. Getting a metabolic boost is an often overlooked and understated part of losing weight. Many people gain weight due to metabolic issues that are hereditary.

What weight loss supplements will not do is totally transform your body. In other words, you aren’t going to wake up one morning and find that you look like a supermodel after a week of taking any weight loss supplement, no matter what any advertising hype leads you to believe. Supplements cannot cause you to suddenly develop six pack abs, but they might make your body more apt to develop muscle. They can help you to transform your body over time, but you will have to eat right and exercise as well. The supplements are merely a catalyst to make your efforts work better.

Supplements can be a great way to jump-start your weight loss efforts.

Weight Loss Supplements alone will not transform your body.

Weight Loss Supplements can help you to lose weight.

If you want to lose weight, then taking a weight loss supplement can be a great way to jump start your weight loss. It can make you feel better by helping you to lose weight quickly at the start (always a confidence booster), and it can help you to get more value (and results) from the work that you are doing on your own. This is one way in which supplements can be greatly beneficial.

Often people with sluggish metabolisms have tried multiple times to lose weight with no success. They stop eating right or stop exercising because they get discouraged. When these same people start their weight loss regimen with the help of high quality weight loss supplements, they are suddenly able to see progress. The weight loss supplements are meant to increase the benefits from a natural work out and healthy diet. They are not meant to replace the need for healthy eating and exercise.

If you are willing to work out regularly and eat a healthy diet, then taking weight loss supplements is very likely to garner an improvement. Just remember that supplements won’t do all of the work for you. What they will do is to enhance your weight loss efforts, including helping to improve your metabolism. They can also help you to shed fat and develop muscle quicker (muscle burns energy). They can even help you to feel hungry less often.

Weight loss supplements can greatly improve your efforts toward losing weight, but remember, just popping a pill or eating a snack bar every day is not going to make the weight fall off, give you chiseled abs or miraculously change your body. You have to do most of the work yourself. But, with help that supplements can provide, you can finally and successfully reach your weight loss goals.

Nutrition supplements are incredibly important to human development. Many people do not realize their value or why they should be taking them. This is because people rarely think of their health when they are feeling well. All too often, it isn’t until people start to feel bad that they begin to consider the role nutrition plays in their overall health.

Vitamins and nutrition supplements are meant to be preventative in nature rather than a cure. Sure, you can survive without them (except essential vitamins which must be a part of your diet), but high quality nutrition supplements can help to enhance your health. You may not realize that your body has nutritional deficiencies, or how great you can feel if you have never tried adding supplements to your daily nutrition plan. People are often amazed by how much better they feel when they add vitamins or certain nutrients they had been lacking back into their diet through supplementation.

There are a variety of nutrition supplements on the market that can help with general health. The basic idea of a health supplement is to provide you with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are lacking in your daily diet. Because processed foods and modern food preparation rob many foods of their natural nutritional value, people often lack a balance of nutrition in their regular diet, and often are unaware of what nutrients they should be getting. So, the need for nutritional supplements is common. Doing some research can help you to find exactly what vitamins and nutritional supplements you may need to enhance your diet, help you to feel better and to be healthier.

For example, taking certain vitamins and nutrition supplements regularly can help you to be far less likely to get sick. Why? Because high quality health supplements can be very effective in boosting your immune system. Supplements like Vitamin C, Echinacea, Goldenseal, Zinc and even Garlic can help to prevent you from getting sick. They won’t necessarily cure you during a sickness; this is why it is important to take them as a part of your daily health regimen. They can help you to get over your sickness quicker. People who are in good health tend to get sick less often and get over their illnesses far quicker than other folks. This is one of the many ways that nutritional supplements can help you.

Getting the right nutrients may not only help to keep you from getting sick, but may also make your healthy days feel a lot healthier. They can help to regulate your digestive system (which is closely related to your immune health), stop fatigue, and ease discomfort. Many common aches, pains and discomforts of everyday life are a result of some sort of imbalance in nutrition. You will be amazed at what getting the right vitamins and nutrients can change. You’ll notice that things like headaches begin to occur less often and stomach problems may cease to exist. These are among many other things that will improve.

If you really want to get on the right track for healthy living, then getting balanced nutrition in your diet is a must. Many nutrition supplements offer a range of benefits, so start your research to find which supplements are right for you. Once you get the right nutrients and take them regularly, your life will most certainly change for the better, making you much happier and better off in the long term.

Allergies are the result of a sensitivity of the immune system – a hypersensitive reaction to a particular allergen. The range of allergens is nearly all encompassing. By far the most common and annoying are those found in the natural environment.

For people who have allergies to things such as pollen, pet dander, certain foods, bees, and other items found naturally in the world around us, life can be quite frustrating. Allergy symptoms vary greatly, but some of the more common signs of respiratory allergies are sneezing, runny nose, difficulty breathing, and red, itchy or burning eyes. Other allergies can include hives and rashes, swelling, vomiting and more. If you are an allergy sufferer, luckily there are many remedies available to help you deal with environmental allergies.

Traditionally, the treatment for allergies was to simply avoid the allergen. Naturally, things such as pollen, pet dander, and insects were not entirely avoidable. People with these type allergies were required to limit their exposure to the outdoors and generally only allowed to have certain types of pets. However, medical advancements over the past thirty years have given allergy sufferers a new lease on life. You no longer have to be held captive by your allergic conditions.

The most common form of allergy medication is antihistamines. While antihistamines do not cure allergies, they provide relief from the symptoms. Alleviating symptoms of allergy allows you to enjoy the lifestyle they want. Antihistamines are used to treat allergies that affect the respiratory system, mainly the above-mentioned items such as pollen and pet dander. Regularly taking antihistamines prior to exposure to known allergens can substantially increase your level of comfort while in the presence of these elements.

There is no over-the-counter cure for allergies. In fact, there is no known cure proven 100% effective for most allergies. If ridding yourself of allergies completely is your goal, your best option is to consider what is known as immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is the process of gradually vaccinating your body to the things to which you are allergic. This vaccination is done through a treatment known as desensitization or hyposensitization. The basic premise of the treatment is to introduce the allergen to your body in a controlled manner so that you can build a resistance to the substance causing the allergy. Immunotherapy can help to greatly reduce the severity of the allergic reaction, or even eliminate it.

If you suffer from allergies, you know that you must take precautions. Medical advancements have given all allergy sufferers the ability to live a more normal life, and experience the same activities that those more fortunate than themselves are able to.

It is formulated to substantially improve the immune system and the digestive tract utilizing probiotic vitamins. It works by restoring the digestive system’s amount of beneficial bacteria. Low amounts of beneficial bacteria are often due to unhealthy diet, chlorinated water and the use of antibiotics. A deficiency of beneficial bacteria can result in a weak immune and digestive system as well as illness.

Other results of an insufficient amount of probiotics can include colds, high cholesterol, eczema, skin problems (acne), irritable bowel syndrome, bad breath, chronic fatigue, diarrhea or constipation, gas and indigestion. Primal Defense combats these unhealthy symptoms by delivering probiotics in a Superfoods base. This gives minerals, enzymes, vitamins and proteins, as well as some trace nutrients. Primal Defense’s MDS™ delivers the probiotics into the digestive tract where they attach to the intestinal lining and begin to grow. The HSOs™ in Primal Defense are an excellent source of Lactoferrin, which helps your body get the iron from the food you eat.

Dana Braddock is a guest contributor to our health blog. She has extensively studied and utilized naturally-based holistic remedies for nearly twenty years. She is highly knowledgeable, and deeply concerned with (and a proponent of) using natural remedies as a means of maintaining balance and optimum health in our bodies’ systems.

You know that the season is here, you have heard the warnings, and you have armed yourself with a huge bottle of gelatinous hand sanitizer. Now what? Do you run screaming from every cough, and lock yourself and your family away until April? Our bosses, our children’s teachers and our families would all agree that this is not a viable option.

It is an accepted fact that most adults will catch two to three colds a year, and children can catch as many as nine. The flu has its own set of statistics, and the media is playing up H1N1 as the new pandemic of the 40 and under set particularly targeting preschool, teenagers, and those with existing respiratory complications.

So again, now what?

I could give you list after grocery list of supplements to begin purchasing in bulk, family-sized quantities to budget for and begin pumping into your family, and in a later edition, I may give some of those gems. For now, I am going to share some lifestyle adjustments that do not cost much, but will help reduce the manifestation of viruses for your family. Notice that I said the manifestation of viruses. You and your family, continuing to live a normal life are going to be exposed to viruses. We are just going to attempt to minimize the opportunity to make your family sick.

First, and this one you know, wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. Teach your children to do the same. Soap and warm water is best; hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. In public restrooms, use paper towels to turn off the water and open the door to exit.

Get good rest, and eat healthy, real foods. The cold and flu season is also the season when our schedules run the fastest. We tend to stay up later, eat snacks, fill-ins and hors d’oeuvres. Party foods and rich desserts dominate the holiday get-togethers. Sodas and other beverages take the place of water in our diets.

Drink water as often as you can. Flavor it with a slice of lemon or orange, if you enjoy it that way, but drink water. It will pay off in increased energy, minimal weight gain, better rest, and increased immunity. As an added note, drink your water from a glass or cup, not from a common drinking fountain. Those do not always get cleaned regularly and some people, sick and healthy, use them as spittoons. Not the fountain of refreshing you may be envisioning. (Yuck!!)

Do you remember on Little House on the Prairie, Leave it to Beaver, and even Happy Days, the moms would always have the family wash for supper? Let’s consider that for a moment. When the father and children came home for the day (from institutional environments of larger groups of people) they changed their clothes. Then when it was time to eat, they washed their faces and their hands. Even when the mother left the house, she would change from her housedress, and change back when she returned.

The point is that they made a concerted effort to come to the table without bringing all of the exposure from their day with them. This preserved school and work clothes and even church clothes, but it also prevented the germs encountered during their day from entering their bodies with their meal.

Many times now, we go to restaurants straight from school, work or especially Sunday school and church environments. Family members come in the door and head straight for the table after a cursory washing of the hands, and invite unwanted guests into our homes and bodies.

If you are cooking dinner and it is already later and you are in for the night, have the kids shower and eat in their pajamas. Somehow it changes the dinner environment. The time together becomes cozier, slower, and healthier. Just changing your thinking (and your shirts) can make for a better winter season.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is incredibly common, affecting up to one in every three adults. It is often considered a “silent” condition because of the fact that the body’s organs are capable of resisting the effects of increased blood pressure for a long time.

As a result, there are not always warning symptoms associated with the condition. However, it is a very serious problem which, left untreated, can lead to increased risk for coronary heart disease, heart failure, kidney failure and stroke.

Blood pressure is the pressure created against artery walls as blood is pumped around your body by the heart. High blood pressure occurs when your blood pressure continues to be abnormally high. If you suffer from hypertension over a long period of time, it can cause damage to the heart and kidneys and other body organs including the brain. It is not the high blood pressure in and of itself that is lethal; but rather the effect, long term, of that pressure on blood vessels.

Regular monitoring of your blood pressure is recommended and can be vitally important, as it might rise without you knowing. Your blood pressure will increase naturally when exercising or in times of stress, but if it stays elevated for a long period of time , it can be a cause for concern.

Understanding the numbers can help you to comprehend the problem. Your blood pressure is measured with two numbers called “systolic” and “diastolic” blood pressure. Systolic is a measure of the pressure exerted on the artery walls as the heart expands, pumping the blood. Diastolic is the measure of blood pressure on the artery walls as the heart contracts between beats. These two numbers are usually reported as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure measured in millimeters of mercury, and are written in units of mmHg.

Your blood pressure should be within a healthy range of approximately 120/80 mmHg for adults. Sometimes it is important to take the measurement more than once, or monitor the measurement over a few consecutive days or weeks to get a proper reading. For many people the mere sight of the blood pressure monitor (or your doctor) can send your blood pressure skyrocketing.

If your blood pressure stays outside of the normal range the majority of the time, you are at risk of pre-hypertension or hypertension. Pre-hypertension means that you are at an increased risk of developing hypertension and should take action to reduce your risk. If your systolic and diastolic blood pressure numbers are not in the matching class of risk, you are assigned to the more serious category.

What are physical symptoms of high blood pressure? Here’s a quick list:

headache

dizziness

nausea

vision problems

But remember, hypertension can often occur without any initial warning symptoms.

What causes high blood pressure?

Blood pressure increases with age, and high blood pressure is more common in people over the age of 35. A healthy lifestyle helps to delay or prevent this from occurring in some people. You are at increased risk of developing high blood pressure if you are older or obese. Some bad habits including heavy alcohol consumption and smoking cigarettes increase your risk. Some medications may increase your risk including the birth control pill, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, nasal drops and sprays and some cough medicines.

To some degree, high blood pressure may be inherited and you might be at an increased risk if there is a strong family history of hypertension, but this isn’t necessarily always the case and will depend on your lifestyle as well as your overall health. Diabetes, gout and kidney disease also pre-dispose you to a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, so it is a good idea to monitor your pressure regularly if you suffer from these conditions.

If you are generally healthy, eat a balanced diet, and are within your normal weight range, you’re doing the right things to protect yourself from the risk of hypertension. Regular checkups with your physician and periodic monitoring can help alert you to any potential high blood pressure signs and symptoms.

Probiotic Vitamins For Digestive Health

Often the digestive system is only thought of as consisting of the mouth and stomach. But the truth is it is actually a whole system of organs designed to ingest food, break it down, digest it and excrete waste. Many organs play a role in the digestive system including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, small and large intestines. With so many organs in play, maintaining good digestive health is essential in achieving overall good health.

The digestive process involves breaking down the food that we eat into smaller parts that can be used by the body to provide nourishment and energy. It begins in the mouth where food is chewed and mixed with saliva. The food then moves through the esophagus and into the stomach where it is chemically broken down by stomach acid.

The movement of the muscles in the esophagus, stomach and small intestine also help to further break down the food. The mixture is emptied into the small intestine where it dissolves further. All of the nutrients are then absorbed through the intestinal walls and the waste is processed via the colon.

The digestive system and the body’s immune system are are more closely related and inter-dependent than many people realize. The immune system relies on the nutrients supplied by the digestive process. Likewise, the digestive system relies on the immune system to protect it from parasites, fungi, viruses and bacteria that enter the stomach via the food we consume.

Most damage to your digestive health results from poor food and nutrition choices. Excess sugar, alcohol, calories and fat are not good for your digestive health. Bad habits that contribute to digestive problems include not chewing your food properly and eating too quickly. In addition, parasites can cause problems with your digestive process. Food that has not be washed or cooked properly can introduce parasites into your body, which can impair your digestive health.

Allergies can also play a role in damaging your digestive system. The most common allergens are wheat, dairy and egg products. These foods all contain proteins that are very complex and difficult for the digestive system to handle.

Some people are more susceptible to food allergies than others because they lack the enzymes required to digest these complex proteins. Allergens can cause damage to the intestinal wall which allows toxins through to the bloodstream. This can be the cause of many ailments that leave you feeling unwell.

Eliminating problematic foods from your diet may be accomplished under the supervision of a physician or health professional as a means of determining if you are suffering from a food allergy or intolerance. In most cases, once problematic foods have been eliminated, they cannot be re-introduced to the body ever again without causing more severe symptoms.

There are many symptoms of poor digestive health. They can include constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, skin rashes, migraines, fatigue, headaches, anxiety, mood swings, acne, depression, irritability, thrush, vomiting, weight loss, excessive gas and chronic pain.

Digestive diseases and disorders are common, and many people suffer for long periods undiagnosed. Some common ones include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Chron’s disease, Celiac Disease, Ulcerative colitis and Candida.

The digestive system is critical to your overall health and involves many major organs. It also supplies the body and the immune system with all the essential nutrients and energy required to function. Poor digestive health can lead to debilitating disease, and so, should be taken very seriously.

Eating well, following a balanced diet and doing those things that promote a healthy digestive system will provide your body with the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs for you to feel strong, healthy and well.

“Swine flu” is a type of influenza known to cause “fever like” symptoms and even death in humans. Its origin is associated with the 1918 swine flu pandemic where many humans and pigs acquired the influenza h1n1 virus. During this period 50 to 100 million were killed worldwide, but today, due to modern technologies and research, proper precautions and methods for prevention are being utilized to keep the public safe.

Swine flu has not had much of an affect on the history of American’s, yet due to recent outbreaks and attributed deaths, swine flu news has become quite prevalent. Information sharing from various sources such as the CDC and other governmental agencies in regards to the h1n1 virus has made it easier for the public to become more knowledgeable and help quarantine the flu.

Swine flu originates from an influenza virus that originated in pigs (hence the name “swine flu”, then became transferable from pigs to humans, and now is transferred between humans. When one contracts swine flu, it may be disregarded as the more common type of influenza. This is due to the fact that swine flu symptoms are much like those of the regular flu. The symptoms can result in lethargy, vomiting, fever, body aches, diarrhea, as well as other common flu symptoms. Symptoms of swine flu may also be very mild on the first day, but can easily carry on from 3 to 7 days.

Some believe that swine flu is no greater health threat than the common flu. However; due to recent spreading of the h1n1 virus, as well as worldwide deaths, swine flu preventions and precautions are more highly looked upon.

Swine flu prevention is similar to most other illnesses of its type. One can follow two simple guidelines in order to help protect their health and well being:

1. Always remember to clean and wash your hands; hand sanitizer is your best friend. The CDC has said that swine flu virus can remain active for up to two hours after coming in contact with a hard surface. So by using hand sanitizer in addition to washing your hands often, you are doing well to protect yourself and others with whom you come in contact.
2. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Too often contagious or sick individuals sneeze and cough without covering their mouth and nose, leaving others at risk for disease exposure. While masks may seem a bit extreme, it is important to cover one’s mouth and nose to eliminate the transfer of virus through the respiratory system.

There are treatments for the h1n1 virus, yet due to the constant rate of evolution of viruses, vaccines and medicines can be hard to make. Most recently the United States Government has released 6 million vaccines in nasal spray form that have been distributed to parts of the population responsible for the care of young children. The next vaccines will come in a bigger batch, and will be available in an injectable form so that the public can have greater access to the vaccine.

Due to recent swine flu deaths, over 550 in Brazil alone, the CDC is making the public aware of how to prevent the transmission of swine flu, and has given top priority to making and distributing the vaccine to the public. Swine flu outbreaks can occur suddenly and proper precautions must met. Most recently in Atlanta, Georgia, students at a private college had to be quarantined to ensure the safety of other students.

The Swine flue incubation period lasts from 5 days to a week, and is vital to prevent the flu from spreading to a larger area. Incubation should not be taken lightly, as one can still spread the h1n1 virus one to two days after feeling better.

Swine flu information and facts are constantly updated through the CDC, as well as other government agencies to ensure the safety and general well being of the public. By understanding the origin and symptoms of the h1n1 virus, proper swine flu precautions and treatments can be utilized in preventing swine flu outbreaks around the world.

One of your body’s most vital systems is the immune system. The immune system is comprised of special cells, tissues and organs that guard the body against harmful substances and foreign organisms. These millions of cells work together to eliminate and resist attacks on the body, thus preventing a multitude of illnesses that we are exposed to daily.

The immune system works hard every day to keep us healthy; therefore, it is imperative that we take care of it. Exposure to toxins – from car exhaust, processed foods, lead paint, chlorine bleach, etc – tax your body and leave you more susceptible to infections. However, there are a few ways to combat this. Consuming antioxidants such as beta-carotene, selenium, and Vitamins A, C and E strengthen your immunity by blocking free radicals, or unstable cells that cause damage. These antioxidants can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. A number of herbs, such as Echinacea, have also been found to have a positive effect.

In addition to a few healthy diet changes, taking care of your body can also do wonders for your immunity. Getting adequate sleep recharges the brain and strengthens its ability to process the stresses that come your way. Take time to soothe yourself by relaxing with a good book, taking a bubble bath or enjoying a leisurely walk when life gets tough for you. Drink 6- 8 glasses of water – your body needs plenty of hydration throughout the day to keep its processes running smoothly. Last but not least, if it’s possible you may be at risk, always use protection during sex to prevent HIV and other infectious diseases.
